Responsibilities of Guests

  • You are responsible for cleaning your room and bathroom as well as cleaning shared areas together with the other students.
  • In shared accommodation, students should jointly draft a plan for the weekly cleaning of the shared living areas (especially bathrooms and kitchen).
  • Students are responsible for purchasing necessary cleaning agents and utensils.
  • Carl Duisberg Centren reserves the right to inspect the premises after giving advance notice.
  • If living quarters are not properly cleaned at regular intervals, Carl Duisberg Centren hires professional cleaning services and passes the costs to the participant.
  • Students must ensure adequate and regular ventilation even during winter months, especially in the bathrooms, to avoid the growth of mold.
  • Please respect local noise laws - in most German cities, residential noise restrictions are in place between 10 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
  • If you would like to host overnight guests, please obtain permission from Carl Duisberg Centren or the property owner.
  • Take your apartment key with you when you leave your accommodation. If an emergency locksmith service is called to open the apartment, you must pay for the cost yourself. If you lose your apartment key, please inform us as soon as possible. You must pay for the lock replacement, as it is not covered by the insurance policy. Please keep your key in a safe place.

Heating Use (Energy Costs)

  • Turn down, but do not turn off the heating when leaving the premises, especially in the winter months (November to March). The room temperature should be set between 18 to 22 degrees Celsius. The rooms should not be overheated.
  • Please turn off the heating when the windows are open.
  • When leaving the apartment, all windows must be closed.

Use of kitchen in shared accommodation

The kitchen utensils should be cleaned directly after use, so that all students can use them.

Internet use

  • Please follow our rules and guidelines for internet use - especially with regard to illegal use in Germany - in all living quarters. The rules of use are enclosed with the welcome folder.

Garbage and Waste Separation

  • Please empty the garbage can regularly and frequently into the provided bin.
  • Waste and food scraps should not be disposed of in the toilet.
  • Please observe the separation of glass, paper, recycling and household waste, as is the rule in Germany.
  • Excessive amounts of cooking grease should be disposed of with household waste. Please do not pour it down the sink drains.

Media Use License Fees

In Germany, all residents are required to pay license fees for radio and television at a monthly cost per household of €17.50. All registered adults living in their own homes/apartments or in shared apartments must pay license fees. If several residents in a shared apartment are obliged to pay fees, one of the members of the group may collect the fees from the other residents and submit the total amount.

If you are living in private accommodation or with a homestay family, please inquire with your landlord to find out if a license fee account exists, or if you must pay the fees as an individual.

The following special regulations apply to dormitories/guesthouses:

  • Rooms in dormitories are considered apartments, so that each room is required to pay the license fee of €17.50 per month. This regulation applies to rooms accessible from a public hallway – regardless of the amenities (own bathroom/kitchen).
  • If a student dormitory space is designed like a private apartment and/or shared apartment, only one license fee is due. This rule applies in cases where the room has it’s own main entrance door which is separate from a general, public hallway or stairway, for which only the residents of the shared apartment have a key.
